CURRICULUM
AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE ENGINEERING CATEGORY B1 AND B2
The subject modules are designed to fulfil the theoretical understanding and practical application requirements for the EASA and QCAR Part-66 Aircraft Maintenance License Basic Examination for categories B1.1 Turbine Aeroplanes and B1.2 Piston Aeroplanes or for the Aircraft Maintenance License Basic Examination for Category B2 Aircraft Avionics. The training courses provide the underpinning knowledge and basic practical hand skills necessary to progress to a safe competent engineer, capable of performing and certifying maintenance tasks on Turbine and/or Piston Aeroplanes. Forty percent of the programme is practical skills training. EASA and QCAA approved examinations (pass mark 75%) are carried out on completion of each subject module and ongoing assessments are carried out during all practical training, with practical reports being completed on completion of each subject. All subject modules are examined by a multi-choice examination paper. Three of the modules also have essay questions in order to test the candidate’s ability to communicate technical information in English.
Theoretical instruction and related practical training are conducted in parallel wherever appropriate. Visits to Maintenance Organisations are scheduled to support the training programme. The final three months of the programme will be conducted within an appropriate Maintenance Organisation for structured and managed training in an operational environment. This assessed on the job training is carried out where base maintenance activities will be regularly encountered in order to ensure that the experience has depth as well as breadth.
The QCAR Part-66 Modules covered are:
1. Mathematics
2. Physics
3. Electrical Fundamentals
4. Electronic Fundamentals
5. Digital Techniques / Electronic Instrument Systems
6. Materials and Hardware
7. Maintenance Practices
8. Basic Aerodynamics
9. Human Factors
10. Aviation Legislation
11. Aeroplane Aerodynamics, Structures and Systems
12. Helicopter Aerodynamics, Structures and Systems
13. Aircraft Aerodynamics, Structures and Systems
14. Propulsion
15. Gas Turbine Engine
16. Piston Engine
17. Propeller
Category B1.1
Modules 1 to 10 plus Modules 11, 15 and 17
Note: Module 11 is studied at the level required for Category B1.1 which is higher than that required for Category B1.2
Category B1.2
Modules 1 to 10 plus Modules 11, 16 and 17
Note: Module 11 is studied at the level required for Category B1.1 which is higher than that required for category B1.2.
Category B1.3
Modules 1 to 10 plus Modules 12 and 17
Category B2
Modules 1 to 10 plus Modules 13 and 14
Modules 4 and 5 are studied to a greater depth for Category B2 students.
Note: an advantage of the QAC Category B2 course is that modules 2, 6 and 7 are studied and examined with scope and depth covering both Category B1 and Category B2. This reduces the duration of a conversion course if you wish to add a B1.1 license to your B2 license at a later date.
